A weekend writers intensive at the Driftless Writing Center in Viroqua, Wisconsin — Come spend an autumn weekend with your writer self in Wisconsin’s beautiful Driftless Area!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

All writers get stuck. Self-awareness can help.

When we know what we are here to say, what we say better than most people, who is driving our writing, and what boundaries we place on our own work, we can break through the stuck places that keep us from moving forward.

During this intensive we will engage in fun and revealing individual and group writing exercises that will help you hear yourself as a writer and discover self-imposed limits you place on your writing that might be holding you back. Come prepared to dig deep and get moving.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This weekend intensive will be thought- and action-provoking for writers in any genre, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and performance art.

There will be significant work devoted to the uncovering of the “characters” in our lives who inform our writing, so poets who work in narrative, persona, dialogue, and other character-based forms will benefit more than those who work exclusively in language or experimental forms.

WORKSHOP LEADER BIO

Jennifer Morales is a poet, fiction writer, and performance artist whose work focuses on questions of identity, complicity, and harm. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University-Los Angeles in 2011. Meet Me Halfway, her collection of short stories about race relations in segregated Milwaukee, will be published by University of Wisconsin Press in spring 2015. Students at Jennifer’s most recent workshop called her a “born teacher” and said the session was “fascinating” and “opened my eyes to a new way into my characters!”

  1. As a member of the Getting Unstuck workshop, I would like to testify to its excellence. Jennifer is completely unforced, natural, easy to listen and talk to — and highly effective.
Her exercises turned us to introspection — but the kind that produces writing instantly. No static navel-gazing. More words, better work!
I hope she offers this workshop again. I would recommend it to anyone.
